Symptoms and treatment of oral phlegmon
An infectious disease in the oral cavity, proceeding in an acute form and representing a diffuse suppuration with inflammation of the cellulose, is called phlegmon of the oral cavity.
There are several reasons for the appearance of phlegmon in the oral cavity. It can arise as a result of an infectious focus caused by the presence of diseased teeth in the lower jaw, periodontitis, periodontitis, cysts, osteomyelitis. The cause of the disease is also trauma to the hyoid space, followed by infection of the wound in the oral cavity.
The most common cases of phlegmon of the oral cavity are lesions of the sublingual space on both sides, accompanied, as a rule, by inflammation of the root of the tongue or submandibular space, which is usually a consequence of infection of the chin area. There may be a simultaneous defeat of both the submandibular and the sublingual topological space from both sides, which is accompanied by the fact that the entire cellular space in the oral cavity is affected.
Oral phlegmon symptoms

The main symptoms accompanying this disease are swelling of the tongue with its possible protrusion from the oral cavity, limited mobility of the tongue, the appearance of a gray-brown plaque on the lingual surface, and impaired speech function. There is difficulty in swallowing and chewing food, impaired respiratory function, profuse salivation, bad breath, signs of intoxication of the body are observed, the shape of the face is distorted with the development of asymmetry. This is due to the fact that soft tissues swell in the chin and submandibular region and neck, edema develops in the region of the lower facial, chin and neck, pain occurs during palpation of the collar and lower facial region and neck;
The phenomena of general intoxication are observed. The temperature rises to 40 ° Celsius and the appearance of chills is noted.
The disease usually develops rapidly, affects the bottom of the oral cavity from both sides, sometimes there is a lesion of adjacent areas of the oral cavity.
In case of untimely access to a doctor and lack of qualified assistance or in a situation of incorrect diagnosis, the disease can cause a number of very serious complications, spread to the region of the periopharyngeal space, neck and posterior maxillary space.
Treatment of phlegmon of the oral cavity
It is very easy to diagnose phlegmon of the oral cavity when examined by a doctor. If in doubt, special tests are prescribed to confirm the diagnosis.
It is possible to cure phlegmon of the oral cavity by carrying out a set of various measures that may differ depending on the stage and nature of the disease.
The early stage is most preferable for conservative treatment, anti-inflammatory therapy, taking antibiotics, and so on.
But, as a rule, the most effective treatment for this disease, in most cases, is surgical treatment. Surgical intervention is performed, during which the affected and necrotic tissues are excised, the suppuration is drained and the open wound is subsequently treated. When excising suppuration not from the side of the oral cavity, cosmetic sutures may be imposed.
If there is a complication of phlegmon in the form of serious breathing difficulties, a tracheostomy is applied to normalize it, and only after that an operation is performed.
As a preventive measure for the occurrence of phlegmon, a number of measures are envisaged in the form of: - timely and thorough sanitation of the oral cavity, namely, timely treatment of gums, teeth, professional oral hygiene; - carrying out thorough oral hygiene; - making regular preventive visits to the dentist.
