Bartholinitis

Causes and symptoms of bartholinitis

What is bartholinitis?

Bartholinitis is an inflammatory process that occurs in the area of the Bartholin gland. It is caused by various kinds of bacteria such as E. coli, staphylococci, Trichomonas, etc., which can come out of the urinary tract or vagina.

Bartholinitis reasons

The causes of the appearance of the disease can be: a weak immune system, lack of personal hygiene, various disorders that pass from the reproductive system of one person to another.

The spread of bartholinitis most often occurs unilaterally, the gland becomes inflamed. Due to this inflammation, the flow channel can be closed, which will not allow purulent secretions to come out. The latter will accumulate as a result, which will lead to an increase in the canal and the appearance of a false abscess. A person will experience pain, in the future, the Bartholin gland may increase in size, and sometimes reach the size of a chicken egg.

Sometimes this inflammation can only affect the Bartholin gland, which will be the result of a real abscess and lead to purulent decomposition of the gland itself. It happens that a purulent formation opens itself, a yellowish-green liquid is released and in the future a person feels well.

The inflammation can go away on its own and without the appearance of purulent discharge, then a dense formation occurs and the gland slightly increases in size. After some time, the inflammation can flare up with renewed vigor and spread. At the initial stage, this disease does not cause much discomfort, there is only a small seal, which is located at the entrance to the vagina. Also, there periodically there may be sensations of burning, tingling, or just mild painful sensations. With the further development and spread of the disease, the pain in the perineum will intensify, especially during intercourse or any physical activity of a person. A person has a sharp rise in temperature up to thirty-eight degrees or more. There is a feeling of coldness and begins to "freeze", as it were.

Bartholinitis symptoms

The main symptom of this disease is the formation of redness of the labia minora near the opening of the Bartholin gland. During palpation, you can see the excretory duct of the gland, which is much thicker than the norm, light pressure on it provokes pain. During illness, as a result of an increase in the density of the secretion and edema, this duct closes, which leads to additional inflammation and redness of the tissues of the gland itself and is the cause of the appearance and development of the disease itself.

Due to the accumulation of secretions that begin to form pus, the patient develops a so-called false abscess of the gland. In the future, such negative aspects are characteristic as a lack of strength, the periodic appearance of pain in the perineum at the site of the lesion, which become sharp during a sitting position or physical activity, an increase in temperature to thirty-eight degrees or more, and general poor health. The labia majora also have a reddish tint and become inflamed. Opening an abscess is a kind of salvation, as the temperature decreases, the state of health improves and the pain gradually subsides.

With a chronic disease of bartholinitis, its development is protracted, deterioration arising from recent illnesses, hypothermia and menstruation is possible.

The rest of the time, the chronic form may not show special signs. Sometimes only slight pains may appear during movement and sexual intercourse. Also, chronic bartholinitis can provoke the appearance of a cyst of a large gland at the entrance to the vagina.

Bartholinitis treatment

In especially severe forms of the disease, it is necessary to place the patient in a gynecological hospital. In this case, it is necessary to take sulfa drugs, painkillers or antibiotics, which you need to continue to take from 1 week to 10 days. The resulting abscess is dissected. When the treatment is over, at home, the patient must ensure that there is no hypothermia of the body, and carefully observe hygiene. It will not be superfluous to treat urethritis and colpitis in order to prevent the appearance of the disease again.

If a woman has chronic bartholinitis, which at the moment does not bother much, you can take baths in water heated to thirty-eight degrees, with the addition of potassium permanganate in the form of a pale pink liquid (1 tablespoon of a solution of potassium permanganate, which has two percent, diluted in liter of water). Or add chamomile infusion to the bath. Take a bath without fail sitting, twenty minutes. Patients usually undergo physical therapy using ultrasound or high frequency magnetotherapy. If there is a cyst, then it is immediately removed.

To further prevent the appearance and development of bartholinitis, it is necessary to carefully monitor personal hygiene, especially in the genital area and perineum. It is necessary to adhere to the schedule for the treatment of urethritis and colpitis, in no case abandoning or missing.
