Orsoten - instructions for use

Orsoten
Orsoten

The drug belongs to the group of drugs for the treatment of obesity, is an inhibitor of gastrointestinal lipases. The drug acts in the stomach and small intestine, inactivating enzymes that break down fats. Triglycerides of dietary fats due to the action of the drug are no longer split into monoglycerides and free fatty acids, they are not absorbed into the blood through the walls of the stomach and intestines. The amount of calories entering the body decreases, which leads to a decrease in body weight.

The drug acts exclusively in the digestive tract, without entering the general bloodstream. Non-split fat enters the feces after 1-2 days, and together with them is excreted from the body. Orsoten is available in the form of white capsules containing microgranules or a mixture of granules with powder. The return to the initial state of the metabolism of the digestive tract occurs 2-3 days after discontinuation of the drug.

Orsoten's composition:

  • The main active ingredient is orlistat;
  • Excipient - microcrystalline cellulose;
  • Substances of the capsule body - water, titanium dioxide, hypromellose.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption - the drug has low absorption. Orsoten is not detected in blood plasma already 8 hours after administration.

  • Distribution - the drug binds to albumin and plasma lipoprotein.
  • Metabolism - occurs in the intestinal wall, forming inactive metabolites.
  • Excretion - complete elimination occurs in 3-5 days, through the intestines - 97%, through the kidneys - 2% of the taken dose of Orsoten. The rest of the drug is excreted in the bile.

Indications for use of Orsoten

  • Long-term treatment of obesity in patients with a BMI over 30 kg / m 2;
  • Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2), the course of which is complicated by obesity, overweight with a BMI over 28 kg / m 2.

Orsoten is prescribed against the background of a low-calorie diet. This drug is combined with drugs that lower blood sugar.

  • Lactation and pregnancy;
  • Children and adolescents;
  • Cholestasis;
  • A symptom of chronic malsorption.

Mode of application

Orsoten is taken with every meal, before meals, or no later than an hour after it, unless the meal contains no fat. One capsule (120 mg) is taken at a time, the total number of doses of the drug is no more than 3 pieces. Orsoten is washed down with water. The total duration of taking the medicine is no longer than 2 years.

Overdose cases of Orsoten were not recorded even with an increase in the number of a single dose by 4-6 times. Clinical trials have shown that this effect persisted over 2 weeks of increased dose.

Side effects

Most of the side effects are associated with the digestive system, specifically with impaired fat absorption. In most cases, they appear in the first 3 months from the start of taking the drug, they have a low intensity. With prolonged treatment, the side effects become less intense or disappear altogether.

Side effects:

  • Flatulence combined with a small amount of feces;
  • Oily stools;
  • Frequent urge to defecate, fecal incontinence;
  • Pain in the projection of the stomach and intestines;
  • Hepatitis;
  • Diverticulitis
  • Damage to the gums and teeth;
  • Hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus;
  • Headache;
  • Allergic urticaria, anaphylactic shock;
  • Dysmenorrhea;
  • Upper respiratory tract infections;
  • Feeling tired.

To reduce the intensity of side effects, you need to follow a low-calorie diet. A diet containing a minimum of fat will help to completely avoid adverse reactions. A low-calorie diet while taking Orsoten contains no more than 30% of calories derived from fats. It is advisable to distribute this amount of fat-containing foods over 3 meals.

Interaction with other medicinal products

  • With the simultaneous administration of anticoagulants (Warfarin) - a decrease in the level of prothrombin, a change in hemostatic parameters;
  • With the simultaneous administration of Pravastatin, it increases its concentration in blood plasma by 30%;
  • When taken simultaneously with fat-soluble vitamins (A, E, K, D) reduces their absorption, a time interval is required between taking Orsoten and these drugs at least 2 hours;
  • When taken simultaneously with Cyclosporine, the level of the latter in the blood plasma decreases.

To fully supply the body with the vitamins and trace elements it needs, which cannot be obtained due to lipid metabolism disorders, multivitamin complexes must be taken during Orsen's treatment.
