Red lichen treatment with modern methods
Treatment of lichen planus on the skin
Most often, the treatment of lichen planus on the skin is not carried out, since the disease, after a certain period of time, passes on its own. To relieve itching, or to speed up the recovery of the skin, the doctor may recommend ointments containing corticosteroid hormones. They will need to be applied to problem areas up to twice a day. It is hormonal ointments that are considered the most effective remedies for the treatment of lichen planus, which is localized on the skin.
In addition to hormonal ointments, a specialist may prescribe other modern means for topical application - this is Protopic ointment with tacrolimus included in it and Elidel ointment with Pimecrolimus.
Hypertrophic lichen planus in some cases requires injections with corticosteroid hormones, since local therapy is not enough. The medicine is injected directly into the affected area. Such drugs can be Acetonide, Triamcinolone, etc.
If the ongoing treatment of lichen lichen does not give the desired effect, then doctors most often recommend therapy with Acitretin.
The most severe cases of lichen planus are treated with corticosteroid hormone tablets. For example, it could be Prednisolone. The therapeutic course is from 3 weeks to 1.5 months. It is possible to undergo a course of phototherapy, procedures are performed up to 3 times a week.
How can you relieve itching?
Often it is the itching that gives the patient with lichen planus expressed concern. In order to normalize your condition and get rid of discomfort, you can apply creams to the skin that have a softening and moisturizing effect.
If the itching continues to bother, then you should consult a specialist on this matter. The doctor will advise on medications that are appropriate for a particular patient. Perhaps these will be antihistamines, for example, Suprastin.
Treatment of lichen planus in the mouth
When rashes appear in the oral cavity, but at the same time they do not cause any discomfort to a person and do not affect his quality of life, then treatment is not required.
Treatment should begin at the point where the rash turns into sores and disrupts normal food and water intake. They can cause quite severe pain, which should not be tolerated. Doctors most often in such situations recommend taking corticosteroid hormones and undergoing a course of laser therapy. If the drugs act from the inside, then the laser cauterizes the formations from the outside.
Although there is no scientifically substantiated data regarding the treatment of lichen planus with Elidel with pimecrolimus, nevertheless, many experts recommend it to their patients to get rid of rashes in the oral cavity.
A dermatologist, when detecting lichen planus in the oral cavity, without fail recommends that the patient visit the dentist for a consultation. The fact is that the disease is often provoked by mechanical trauma to the oral mucosa. They can be applied with sharp edges of teeth or dentures, tartar. In addition, the development of inflammation due to an allergic reaction to the components that make up the installed fillings or prostheses is possible.
The dentist is able to get rid of the existing problem and the red lichen in the mouth will pass without taking any medications.
Treatment of lichen planus in the genital area and anus
To rid a person of rashes in the anus and in the genital area, ointments with corticosteroid hormones (Clobetasol, Triamcinolone) and tacrolimus (Protopic) are also used.
If you experience painful sensations during intimacy caused by lichen, you can use water-based lidocaine lubricators.
Sometimes lichen lichen leaves behind adhesions. They are removed when the disease is eliminated.
Treatment of lichen planus on the scalp and nails
When the disease is localized on the scalp, therapy should be started as soon as possible. This is due to the fact that there is a risk of hair loss in the affected area without the possibility of their subsequent restoration.
The nails and scalp are treated with corticosteroid hormones. They are applied either topically in the form of ointments, or they are injected with these drugs, injecting them into the affected area.
In severe cases, oral administration of corticosteroid hormones is possible.

Treatment of red lichen with folk remedies
- Church incense. Traditional healers recommend treating lichen red with a remedy based on church incense. In equal quantities (50 grams each) it is mixed with aloe juice and chopped garlic, after which one egg yolk is added and everything is beaten well with a fork. This tool is suitable for external use - it is used to lubricate the affected areas. Store the medicine in the refrigerator, and shake it before each use.
- Apple vinegar. Undiluted apple cider vinegar is also used in the treatment of lichen planus. This folk remedy is used as a lotion, applying a cotton swab dipped in vinegar for 10 minutes to the affected area. It is recommended to carry out 4-6 procedures per day. Apple cider vinegar isn't the only remedy that works for lotions. It can be replaced with cranberry or viburnum juice.
- Sea buckthorn oil is also considered a good folk remedy for lichen planus. It is used for lotions: a small piece of gauze is moistened with oil and applied to the affected area of the skin or mucous membrane. The duration of the procedure is from half an hour to an hour. Sea buckthorn oil is also suitable for internal use: on an empty stomach in the morning you need to eat half a teaspoon.
- Beet. It is also recommended to put grated beets on lichen plaques, wrapping them with a bandage on top. When the raw material is dry, the dressing must be replaced with a fresh one. The procedure should be repeated until the lichen heals.
- Hardening. Hardening for red lichen is also useful: dousing with cold water will not only strengthen the immune system, but also improve the oxygen supply of the affected tissues.
- Birch tar. Another effective ointment against lichen lichen is birch tar (150 g), mixed with the yolks of two eggs and fresh cream (100 g).
- Calendula. Calendula deserves special attention, decoctions, infusions and alcoholic tinctures of which have long been used to treat lichen planus. Alcohol tincture can be bought at a pharmacy, and the infusion can be prepared by brewing two tablespoons of chopped raw materials in a glass of boiling water. This infusion is used for lotions.
