Description of Gelsemium
Poisonous Gelsemium from the Loganiev family is a beautiful evergreen shrub, the height of which often reaches about one meter. This climbing plant with twisting thin branches has a cylindrical rhizome with thin long roots and underground horizontal shoots. The opposite lanceolate leaves are dark green and glossy. Dense leathery plates have a solid edge. The fruit is a reddish-brown opening box containing numerous seeds.
Graceful opposite flowers up to 5 cm long are rationally located only in the axils of the upper leaves. They are pale yellow in color and have a pleasant smell. Gelsemium grows well in Central America along the sea and river banks. It is successfully bred in the Caucasus in spacious light greenhouses. For medicinal purposes, only thickened rhizomes with shoots and roots are collected and harvested.
