Pain relievers for back pain

Pain medications
Pain medications

Almost everyone knows this unpleasant sensation when the back is constrained by pain and there is neither the ability nor the desire to move. And if pain occurs regularly, disrupting a person's usual way of life, then immediate qualified assistance is required. Don't joke with that!

In addition, doctors are categorically against the self-prescription of any pain relievers, because the problem of back pain is individual. All people are different and, accordingly, back pain in each person occurs for different reasons, is localized in all sorts of places and has an unequal duration. Each individual case requires a private approach and treatment.

Fortunately, today's pharmaceutical companies add to the existing arsenal of pain relief drugs every year. Therefore, today doctors no longer doubt whether it is necessary to take painkillers. The only question is how to select them correctly so that the pain syndrome decreases or is completely eliminated.

Basic methods of dealing with back pain

In medicine, there are three main methods used to treat back pain.

  1. Drug therapy includes, among other things, taking painkillers. According to their composition, such drugs are divided into three groups: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics and muscle relaxants (drugs that relieve muscle spasms). In addition, patients must be prescribed B vitamins in combination with external drugs.
  2. Non-drug therapy consists in creating and maintaining special conditions for the patient's back - physiotherapy exercises, the use of special devices that support the spine and orthopedic mattresses, a moderate motor regime, physiotherapy.
  3. Surgical intervention is an extreme measure, which is used for severe forms of curvature of the spine, herniated discs, etc.

Groups of painkillers

Analgesics are a significant group of drugs that can reduce or eliminate pain. They are divided into two types: narcotic and non-narcotic.

  1. Narcotic analgesics are a powerful remedy for pain in the back. Severe chronic pain in patients is often relieved with opioid analgesics. If we take into account the strength of the analgesic effect, they can be roughly divided into weak (tramadol, hydrocodone, codeine, propoxyphene) and strong drugs used to eliminate unbearable pain (methandone, fentanine, morphine, hydromorphone). Pains of moderate intensity are relieved by combined preparations containing compounds of weak opioid analgesics.

Despite the effective elimination of pain, these drugs are used by specialists with extreme caution and only when absolutely necessary. As you know, narcotic drugs have a detrimental effect on the nervous system, and with frequent use they can cause physical dependence.

  2. Non-narcotic pain relievers. They are also classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics, which have the ability to reduce fever and relieve pain. The second group is represented by the well-known analgin and paracetamol. Moreover, analgin is produced both as a separate drug and as part of other drugs (baralgin, tempalgin, benalgin, etc.)

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have a triple effect: they deal with infectious inflammation, lower body temperature, and eliminate pain. The most common drug in this category is diclofenac sodium. Pharmaceutical companies release it separately and as part of such drugs as veral, dicloberl, voltaren, ortofen, diclofen, clofen, naklofen and others. It is worth noting that this group also includes acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), as well as drugs that contain it (ascofen, ibuprofen, citramon, chlotazole, indomethacin, etc.).

Since absolutely all parenteral pain relievers have their own side effects, it was decided to create drugs with local application. These include creams, ointments, balms, gels, etc. Thus, it became possible to prevent the negative effects of side effects from drugs entering the general bloodstream. Of course, drugs for topical treatment also get inside, but their intake is significantly reduced. Creams and ointments provide good analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects and, importantly, reduce the need for internal medication.

Classification of drugs used externally for back pain

  1. Medicines containing analgesics, anti-inflammatory substances and non-steroidal drugs.

Currently, Fastum Gel has received the greatest demand. It is successfully used to relieve pain of various origins (menstrual back pain, hypothermia, postoperative and post-traumatic pain, renal colic).

Quite good reviews about such modern domestic drugs as Bystrum (analogue of Fastum Gel), ketoprofen-containing products Ketonal, Finalgel, Febrofid. The most popular drugs that contain nimesulide are ibuprofen, diclofenac, and indomethacin.

  2. Combined preparations intended for local treatment have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. As a result of their action, tissue regeneration improves, hematomas resolve and blood flow in the vessel is restored. Dolobene gel has proven itself as an anesthetic for back pain accompanied by edema.
  3. Drugs that are characterized by analgesic and local irritant effects. These include Kapsikam, Finalgon, Analgos cream, apizartron, Nikoflex and other medicines that are able to dilate blood vessels and provide blood flow to inflamed areas. Thus, metabolism is stimulated, active tissue nutrition begins and the general condition improves.
  4. Local chondroprotectors Artrocin and Chondroxide, thanks to the active components of dimethyl sulfoxide and chondroitin contained in their composition, are able to slow down the processes of degeneration and restore cartilage tissue.
  5. Homeopathic medicines are also actively used, which improve metabolism, stimulate cartilage tissue, prevent its destruction and relieve pain.
  6. The last group of drugs for the treatment of pain in the lumbar region and back include combination products, medicinal cosmetics and massage balms, which are based on plant extracts. This broad group of medicines includes mummy, bee venom, bear bile, etc.
  7. Thanks to the action of powerful natural ingredients in the treatment process, it is often possible to achieve a good therapeutic effect. Doctors, along with patients, recommend such preparations as Comfrey ointment, Shungit and Sophia creams, Artrocin gel and Valentin Dikul's balms. All these funds are used in the complex treatment of back pain due to osteochondrosis, lumbago, radiculitis, trauma and hypothermia.

Summing up, I would like to emphasize that this article is for information only. Do not be lazy to make an appointment with a doctor, because only a qualified physician, having studied the anamnesis and carried out an examination, will be able to choose the right medicine and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
