Breast granuloma

Causes, diagnosis and treatment of breast granulomas

mammary granuloma
mammary granuloma

Granuloma is a neoplastic process in the tissues of the body of an inflammatory nature. It manifests itself in the form of proliferation of connective tissue cells, forming small nodules. First of all, the walls of blood and lymph vessels are affected, and then granuloma develops from local tissue elements. Distinguish granulomas infectious, non-infectious and unclear etiology.

Reasons for the development of mammary granulomas

A mammary gland granuloma can develop for various reasons, and one of them is long-term wearing of silicone implants. Over time, silicone necessarily seeps out of its shell with the formation of nodules.

The mechanism of their formation is as follows: if it is impossible to remove the damaging agent with the help of phagocytes, macrophages gather around it. Where a foreign body is located, necrotic processes begin to develop with the formation of scar tissue. A powerful fibrous capsule with calcareous deposits is often formed, as a result of which the woman begins to feel pain in the chest. Most often, the development of granulomas occurs when wearing silicone implants for over 12 years.

A mammary gland granuloma can also develop with actinomycosis. The clinical picture of the disease in this case is expressed by the formation of small separately lying nodules with the subsequent accumulation of pus in them. After opening the abscesses, long-term non-healing fistulas are formed.

Actinomycosis refers to mycoses conditionally, due to the similarity of the causative agent of this disease with a fungal infection and a similar course of the disease. In practice, it is quite rare, accounting for no more than 0.1% of all cases of inflammatory breast diseases.

Multiple caseous granulomas in the mammary gland can also be found in sarcoidosis, a multisystem disease that affects the breast parenchyma. Doctors know quite a bit about this disease, but you can be sure that it is not cancer or an infectious disease. Often the disease goes away without any treatment for 2-3 years and the person may not even suspect that he had something. But even if sarcoidosis lasts longer, most patients continue to lead a normal life.

Diagnosis of breast granulomas

Any of the lumps in the mammary gland may indicate pathological changes in the tissues, so it is not recommended to postpone a visit to the doctor. In a medical facility, you will be given the correct diagnosis after breast palpation, ultrasound, mammography, ductography (injection of contrast agents into the breast flows), fine-needle biopsy (if necessary). If actinomycosis is suspected, the discharge of the fistula is examined.

Breast granuloma treatment

Depending on the cause of the development of breast granuloma, the treatment prescribed by the doctor will also depend. This can be surgery in the form of resection (excision) of the affected area, taking actinolysates, penicillin, immunomodulators and vitamins.

Navel granuloma

A disease such as navel granuloma (fungus) in newborns is also quite common. It can occur due to the growth of granulations at the bottom of the umbilical wound after the process of the umbilical cord falls off. Granulation is just the name for a type of connective tissue made up of young cells and many vessels that promotes rapid wound healing.

In the case when the granulation tissue grows faster than the skin covering it, then a granuloma is formed. It is a small moist reddish nodule, as if growing from the navel. Sometimes it is on a leg and reaches the size of a pea.

The most effective method of treating navel granuloma is cauterizing it, i.e. processing of granulations with a concentrated solution of silver nitrate diluted in water or alcohol. Sometimes one course is not enough, then the doctor prescribes additional treatment. Even less often, it is necessary to cut off excess granulation tissue, after which the operated site may bleed for some time.

Silver nitrate can cause chemical burns to the skin, so use the drug with care. It should also be remembered that silver stains the skin black, so you should not be afraid of this, because the blackening passes without a trace after 2-3 weeks. With a completely healed granuloma, medical supervision for this disease is not required.

There are diseases of the navel with the formation of granulomas in adults. To avoid complications, you should not self-medicate, but you should definitely consult a doctor. Moreover, the sooner you come to the doctor with a problem, the more successful and effective the treatment result will be.
