The tailbone of a person is represented by 3-5 underdeveloped vertebrae, and the first of them has outgrowths, such as those of similar typical vertebrae, the other vertebrae of the tailbone are rounded. The sacrococcygeal junction is a synchondrosis with its own intervertebral disc and an opening for the end filament of the dura mater of the spinal cord.

Various muscles are attached to the tailbone, which contribute to the functioning of the intestines and organs of the genitourinary system. The tailbone provides strength to the tissues and organs of the small pelvis. Normally, it is slightly bent forward, during the bending of the sacrum, its muscles and ligaments are elastic. On palpation, it softly springs. At the age of 17-25, when the sacral vertebrae grow together to form the sacrum, the tailbone becomes hard. In case of injury, the tailbone can be displaced more forward, to the side, sometimes forward and to the side.

Double fold possible. Rarely occurs after injury, the displacement of the first coccygeal vertebra backward, and the rest forward. Painful sensations when pressed can appear, sometimes they are absent, if a lot of time has passed since the moment of injury. The usual location of the tailbone is in the fold between the buttocks, but the injury can be so severe that there is a displacement of the tailbone under one of the gluteal muscles, it is difficult to feel it in this case.

The bend of the tailbone disrupts the physiological processes in the body, impairs metabolism in myofascial structures, affects blood circulation and lymph outflow in the organs and tissues of the small pelvis. Therefore, it is important to correct the defect and start the self-healing mechanism. Be sure to check the position of the tailbone at the age of 2-3 months in babies.

The lower coccygeal vertebrae have a hook-shaped shape, but with intrauterine stress, trauma and microtrauma during childbirth, a significant displacement of the sacrum and a more pronounced bend of the coccyx may occur. Further, if you do not take action, this pathology will progress and cause a lot of trouble, because it is also a change that disrupts the functions of the neuromuscular complex, a detrimental effect on the biologically active zone and the reproductive area. This changes the emotional state.

Severe displacement that causes the tailbone to bend can compress blood vessels and affect the state of the brain, as a result, headaches appear and some diseases may develop. During labor, the mobility of the sacrum and coccyx is an important feature, not only for the woman's pelvis, but also for the head of the fetus, ensuring the course of labor without injuries. The lack of mobility of the base of the sacrum outward makes it difficult for the child's head to enter the small pelvis and has a very negative effect on the contractions, up to their stopping.

Even if the baby's head passes freely into the small pelvis, then the child will not be able to move further due to the difficulty in moving the base of the sacrum inward and bending the tailbone. The bend of the tailbone during pregnancy occurs not only as a result of injury, but also as a result of anxious experiences, which causes tension in the pelvic floor.

Pregnant women are advised to visit an osteopathic doctor for early detection of pathology. To correct the coccyx, the Recoil osteopathic technique (rebound) is used, during which pressure is applied to the anatomical structure and then the force (rebound) is abruptly stopped. Elimination of the bend, including double, is performed during palpation, such an effect on the tone of the internal and external muscles and ligaments of the tailbone restores its previous shape.

Pain in the tailbone area when bending can be constant and paroxysmal. Their intensity increases during bowel movements, while sitting and when trying to stand up. Quite often, the pain radiates to the gluteal part, to the perineum and to the genitals, irradiation is felt to the inner surface of the thighs. The diagnosis of pain in the coccyx is simple, first of all, a digital examination of the rectum is performed.

In addition to digital examination, X-ray of the sacrococcygeal region, ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity are prescribed. After determining the degree of injury and identifying the displacement of the tailbone, you need to wait until the inflammation and swelling pass and then you can start eliminating the bend of the tailbone.

In the acute period, with painful symptoms in the coccyx zone, it is recommended that bed rest is not recommended to sit, in some cases you can use a special orthopedic pillow. You cannot take hot baths, apply warm bandages with warming ointments on the tailbone, but cold compresses will relieve pain, swelling and bruising.

Physical activity, massage procedures are contraindicated.

It is necessary to learn to be vigilant, in the event of a fall on the tailbone, it is better to immediately adequately assess the condition at the doctor's appointment, not to start the disease, its consequences can be the most unpredictable.
