Causes and treatment of volvulus in children
Volvulus, or intestinal obstruction, is accompanied by obstruction of the intestinal lumen, which causes blood flow to certain parts of the intestine to be disturbed, which can lead to gangrene. In case of untimely medical care, the patient is in danger of death.
Causes of volvulus in children
The cause of volvulus in children can be: a sharp turn of the body, constipation, trauma, adhesions, neoplasms, infringement. The intestinal lumen can also overlap with helminthiasis.
Volvulus in children can be either complete or partial, it can develop as a result of congenital pathology or occur in a child whose internal organs are fully consistent with age standards. Depending on the location of the pathological process, low and high, as well as colon and small intestinal volvulus are distinguished. The cause of the disease can be dynamic and mechanical.
Intestinal obstruction is caused by a violation of the movement of feces in the intestine, which causes overflow and stretching of the organ, and also affects the normal functioning of the intestine. Compression of the intestine is accompanied by severe complications that are caused by impaired blood flow in the vessels supplying the intestinal wall. Narrowing of the lumen of blood vessels can lead to perforation and cause peritonitis or inflammation in the abdominal cavity.
Volvulus in children is accompanied by an increase in body temperature, acute pain in the abdomen, and vomiting. Blood or mucus may appear in the stool. The child's appetite disappears, he becomes restless, often cries, pulls his legs under him. Attacks appear and end suddenly, in the intervals between exacerbations of pain, children can vomit twice. Parents should be alerted to severe constipation, the formation of seals in the lower abdomen, the accumulation of gas, as well as the complete cessation of the discharge of feces and gases, which occurs some time after stool retention.
The cause of volvulus in children of the first year of life is most often a hiatal hernia. In children aged five to six years, this pathology is rare.
Treatment of volvulus in children
It is important to remember that intestinal obstruction requires urgent medical attention and immediate hospitalization.
The treatment of volvulus in children begins with conservative methods of therapy with the obligatory conduct of perirenal and presacral blockade with 0.25% novocaine. Pain relievers and medicines are prescribed to help remove toxins from the body, and a siphon enema is given. If these methods of treatment are ineffective, surgery is performed.
