Physalis
Growing and using the beneficial properties of physalis
Botanical characteristics of physalis
Physalis is the largest genus of plants in the Solanaceae family, often compared to tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum). People call it emerald berry or earthy cranberry (although it has nothing to do with cranberries). This plant has a thin and stiff root system. On a straight stem, which branches upward, leaves are arranged in pairs on petioles. The leaves are pointed at the top. In early summer, the plant begins to bloom and small drooping flowers appear on the stems. Fruits ripen until frost. Physalis fruit is an orange berry, small in size, slightly similar in appearance to an ordinary cherry. The fruit is in an orange-red calyx, which has hairs on its surface.
Physalis grows throughout Russia, as well as in Iraq, the Baltic States and the Caucasus. Most often, this plant is found between shrubs, in the forest and in vegetable gardens.
Physalis propagation
Physalis is propagated by seedlings. In the spring, the seeds of the plant are sown in moist soil. The seeds are covered with glass and kept in a warm room. When the seeds germinate, the glass is removed, and the container with the seedlings is placed in a bright place. The plant needs to be watered regularly and in moderation.
Seedlings need to be fed with fertilizers every 14 days. When 3 real leaves appear on the seedlings, they need to be planted in plastic cups. After some time, the seedlings should be transplanted into larger pots than the cups. And only then the plants are planted in the ground.
Growing and caring for physalis
Physalis can grow and develop well in the sun, in the shade and partial shade. The soil for its cultivation must be fertile, prepared and with fertilizers. Physalis loves moist soil, but stagnant water is detrimental to it. Physalis, like any other plant, needs weeding, watering, regular care and loosening. Regular watering should be stopped from August, as it will slow down the ripening of the fruits.
When growing physalis, crop rotation must be taken into account: this means that this plant will grow perfectly after cabbage, cucumbers and root crops, but in the area where nightshade crops grew will not grow at all.
Useful properties of physalis
Physalis fruits are used as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic. This plant has diuretic, choleretic and hemostatic properties. A decoction is prepared from physalis, which is used for bronchitis, edema, rheumatism, bruises and gout. Physalis fruits are used for medicinal purposes to prevent diseases of the urinary tract, urolithiasis and diseases of the bladder.
Dried physalis is recommended to use for flu, colds and inflammations of the respiratory tract. Mature physalis is used as a dietary product. A decoction of physalis roots is used for prolonged menstruation.
Physalis application
Traditional medicine widely uses the fruits of physalis for hypertension, constipation and anemia. A decoction from the fruits of the plant is recommended for use with jaundice, bleeding, hemorrhoids and colic in the stomach. Outwardly, an ointment from the fruits of the plant is used in the presence of wounds, inflammations and as an anesthetic. Fresh physalis is advisable to regularly consume people who have signs of dysentery, gonorrhea and dermatosis. In addition, physalis is a multivitamin product. Fresh physalis juice has a positive effect on the treatment of lichen.
