ORP of water - negative and positive

Not a single living organism can provide its vital functions (homeostasis) and the regeneration of damaged cells without energy supply. Energy is released as a result of redox reactions, that is, reactions of addition or transfer of electrons. The vital activity of all living beings depends on the intensity and speed of these reactions.

What is ORP?

ORP of water
ORP of water

In the world that surrounds us, we do not see this, but there is a continuous exchange of electrons, which occurs between substances in the air, on earth, in water and in our bodies. This phenomenon is known as ion exchange.

In an attempt to achieve a state of stability in substances in which there are no electrons, they desperately seek electrons wherever they may be: these substances are called oxidants. On the contrary, substances that have an excess of electrons are able to donate their extra electrons: these substances are called reducing agents or antioxidants.

Oxidation-reduction potential (or ORP) is a measurement that indicates the degree to which a substance is capable of oxidizing or reducing another substance. You can also find the definition: "ORP is a measure of the purity of water and its ability to destroy pollutants." The range is –2000 to +2000, and the units are mV (millivolts).

  • A positive ORP value indicates that the substance is an oxidizing agent. The higher the value, the more it oxidizes. Thus, a substance with an ORP reading of +400 mV oxidizes 4 times more than a substance with an ORP reading of +100 mV.
  • A negative ORP value indicates that the substance is a reducing agent. The lower the value, the more antioxidants. Thus, a substance with an ORP reading of -400 mV is 4 times more antioxidant than a substance with an ORP reading of -100 mV.

Almost all of the water that is available to us, including tap water and bottled water, is oxidizing because its ORP is positive. For comparison, the ORP values of drinking water can be cited, it ranges from +200 to +300 mV, and sometimes reaches +550 mV.

The ORP of the human body, measured at the platinum electrode, during the experiment ranged from -100 mV (millivolt) to -200 mV. This is an indicator of the restored state of the liquid medium.

It is also worth noting that a large amount of pollutants in the water leads to a lower amount of dissolved oxygen, since living organisms consume oxygen, their internal environment has a negative ORP value. The higher the ORP level, the more the water has the ability to destroy foreign contaminants such as microbes or carbon contamination.

The ORP level can also be considered as the level of bacterial activity in water, since there is a direct relationship between the ORP level and the amount of coliform bacteria in the water.

Since all important systems consist of molecular structures with charges of different polarities, such complex processes depend on the activity of electrons as:

  • Energy storage;
  • Replication and inheritance of species traits;
  • Power consumption;
  • Selectivity and control over biochemical processes in the body;
  • The functioning of all enzymatic systems of the body.

Violation of the balance of oxidation and reduction processes, according to scientific research, leads to the emergence and further development of diseases. Water with a positive ORP penetrates the body and exposes its tissues to oxidative destruction. This happens when water molecules take electrons away from cells, which are negatively charged. The destruction of cell membranes, nucleic acids, cell organelles leads to the fact that organs and tissues lose vital functions, and the human body ages and wears out.

This negative process can be slowed down and even stopped by drinking (and cooking food) with negative ORP. This liquid has protective and restorative properties, which is confirmed by scientific research by Russian and foreign scientists. If the fluid entering the body has a positive charge, it has to be converted by means of the electrical potential of the cell membranes.

It is even better if the ORP of the fluid entering the body is lower than the ORP of a person. Then the potential difference becomes a kind of reserve for feeding the body and protecting it from an unfavorable external environment.

The destruction of the redox system of the body is facilitated by such negative factors as:

  • Poor quality drinking water;
  • Unbalanced diet:
  • Psycho-emotional overload, stress;
  • Alcoholism, addiction to smoking;
  • Exposure to toxins from the environment;
  • Frequent illnesses;
  • Drug abuse.

If oxidative reactions regularly prevail over reducing ones, sooner or later the body reaches the limit of its defenses, it is no longer able to resist diseases. Antioxidants and their antioxidant effect are called upon to slow down this process.

What is water pH?

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It has a value on a scale of 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral, less than 7 is more acidic, and more than 7 is more alkaline. The closer you move to 0, the more acidic the solution, and the closer to 14, the more alkaline the solution.

pH is often plotted in a graphical color scale as shown below:

When it comes to water, its pH value is directly related to the ratio of positively charged hydrogen ions [H +] to negatively charged hydroxyl ions [OH -].

  • When water has the same concentration of H + and OH - ions, it is considered neutral (pH = 7)
  • When water has a high concentration of H + ions, it is considered acidic (pH <7)
  • When water has a high concentration of OH -, it is considered alkaline (pH> 7)

The pH scale is a logarithmic scale, which means that when the pH increases or decreases by one unit, you change the concentration of H + ions by a factor of 10. For example, a solution with a pH of 8.0 is 10 times more alkaline than a solution with a pH of 7.0. A solution with a pH of 9.0 is 100 times more alkaline than a solution with a pH of 7.0.

Blood pH is one of the most stable indicators of the human body. Normally, it ranges from 7.35 to 7.42. Arterial blood has a pH of 7.4, venous blood due to the presence of carbon dioxide in it - 7.35. These are very important indicators; when they change by at least 0.1 pH, severe pathologies develop.

With increased acidity (relative to the norm), they talk about acidosis, and with increased alkalinity, about alkalosis. Such conditions are dangerous to the body and indicate health problems.

Negative ORP water

"Living water", or catholyte, exists not only in the imagination of storytellers. If you wish, you can cook it yourself. In its pure form, it practically does not occur in nature, since its molecules are very unstable and quickly lose their electrons, turning into water familiar by its properties.

Water retains a negative charge for 2 days if stored in a tightly closed vessel. "Living water" protects the body from free radicals, helps the immune system. With its help, the body receives additional energy, increasing the corresponding potential of cells.

The human body is not alone in responding positively to drinking water with negative ORP. Farm animals and plants increase their productivity by acquiring "live force" after drinking such water.

Water with a positive ORP

Water with a positive ORP
Water with a positive ORP

"Dead water", or anolyte, has exceptional bactericidal properties. It is a liquid with a high positive ORP index. For comparison, ordinary tap water has an ORP of +200 mV (the value is average and depends on many factors).

The bactericidal properties of "dead water" have been successfully used in the following areas:

  • As a remedy for the treatment of acute respiratory infections and influenza, for rinsing the mouth and throat from tonsillitis and fungal infections;
  • For washing of acne and epidermal defects, for skin elasticity;
  • For disinfection of premises, medical supplies, as well as linen and utensils;
  • To normalize sleep and the capabilities of the nervous system;
  • Lowering blood pressure, relieving joint pain.

Unlike "living water", this substance retains its structure for a long time - from 1 to 2 weeks, subject to storage rules (in a closed container).

Why does our body need water with negative ORP?

In addition to normalizing the metabolism of human body tissues, improving well-being, increasing the threshold of susceptibility to adverse factors, "living water" has many medicinal properties.

ORP negative water treatment:

  • Water has an antioxidant effect, that is, it fights free radicals.
  • Favorably affects the restoration of the elasticity of blood vessels and capillaries
  • Within a month, it is able to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients
  • Promotes weight normalization;
  • The acid-base balance is normalized after acid waste is removed through the kidneys;
  • Reduced blood sugar;
  • Improved vital signs in cholecystitis, radiculitis, rheumatism, pancreatic diseases, cervical erosion;
  • There is a regeneration of ulcerative lesions of the digestive tract, trophic ulcers, burns, bedsores, wounds;
  • Hair is cured of dandruff, becomes silky;
  • Adenoma of the prostate is cured;
  • The tone of blood vessels, the function of the large intestine is restored;
  • The biological processes of the body, metabolism are stimulated;
  • Digestion and appetite improve after recovery from prolonged illness.

The Japanese have successfully used water with a low ORP (down to -560 mV) in the treatment of brain and other cancers.

Baths with "living water" charge the blood, improving its performance, filling cell membranes with free electrons. From this, the blood vessels become more elastic, the reserves of the lymphatic system are activated, the thermoregulation of the body is activated.

In addition to the undoubted health benefits, "living water" is used to preserve the freshness of flowers, fruits and vegetables, germinate seeds, treat potato tubers and perennial flower plants. Such water is given to pets to drink to maintain their health. It is suitable for garden and vegetable pest control without systemic insecticides.

How to measure the ORP of water?

How to measure the ORP of water
How to measure the ORP of water

The measurement of the redox potential is carried out using a special device called an ORP meter.

This device has 2 electrodes:

  • With a negative pole (made of silver);
  • With a positive pole (made of platinum).

The electrodes are placed in the liquid to be measured and the readings are taken in millivolts (mV). The value of the very low voltage created when the electrodes are placed in a liquid is an indicator of the ORP.

You can measure the ORP not only of water, but in general of any liquid (even the ORP of fruits and vegetables, having learned how many electrons you get by eating them).

How to prepare negative ORP water?

How to measure the ORP of water
How to measure the ORP of water

To give ordinary water a negative charge, household activators or electrolyzers are produced. They are designed to convert water into catholyte ("living" water) and anolyte (acidic or "dead" water).

The main parts of the device:

  • The power supply is a constant current source with overload protection;
  • The main container is the place of formation of "living water", most often made of plastic;
  • Ceramic glass - a kind of diaphragm between the anode and cathode, the place of formation of "dead water", is located inside the main tank;
  • Removable cover with electrodes - 2 black anodes, coated with a special coating, and 2 cathodes made of light food grade stainless steel.

The materials from which the electrodes are made and their coating are designed to resist electrochemical destruction.

The sequence of the activator:

  • The top cover with electrodes is removed.
  • Water is poured into a ceramic glass and into the main container. In the main container, its level should be below the level of the glass.
  • The cover is put on the activator so that the anodes are inside the glass, and the cathodes are outside it.
  • The activator is plugged into the socket, the turn-on time is noted. In this case, gas bubbles appear on the cathodes, the voltage indicator glows.
  • The water activation process lasts from 10 to 40 minutes, depending on the purpose of use.

The longer the operating time of the device, the more concentrated the product obtained at the exit.

How to prepare negative ORP water at home?

It is quite possible to prepare "living" water with negative potential at home. Exceptional properties are possessed by an oat-based drink with an ORP equal to the redox potential of the human internal fluid environment. When it is used, the energy of the cell membranes of the body tissues is not spent on bringing the incoming fluid to the optimal value.

The sequence of making "living water" from oats:

  • Sort out 140 g of oat grains, clean them of impurities, rinse in several waters until completely clear water flows from the grain during rinsing.
  • Prepared oats are placed in a jar, poured over it with 2 liters of drinking water.
  • The container is sealed not with a lid, but with a plastic wrap, and left for 10-12 hours in the dark.
  • After part of the oat grains sinks into the lower layer of water, the container is kept in the refrigerator for 11 hours.
  • The appearance of a pleasant smell of the drink is a sign of readiness for use. It is poured into small cans, ideally a metal bottle. Shelf life at room temperature - 6 hours, in the refrigerator - 3 days. Always store in a tightly closed lid. If you are using a regular bottle for storage, you can wrap it in foil to extend the shelf life.
  • The oat grain is poured again with water for reuse, insisted in an accelerated mode: 8 hours in the room and in the refrigerator. The additional cycle can be repeated twice.

To prevent mold from forming on the surface of the grain that has floated to the surface of the liquid, you can use several techniques:

  • Washing oats for its disinfection with anolyte water with ORP +800;
  • Washing oats with soda solution;
  • Selecting oats that have floated to the surface using a wooden spoon.

Metal is undesirable for this purpose, since it takes free electrons from the liquid.

By elementary calculations it is easy to calculate that the redox potential of the liquid has decreased by 970 units, from 249 mV to -721 mV.

Negative ORP from oatmeal

Oats retain their ORP-reducing properties in liquids even after being converted to oatmeal. If we take flakes without any impurities, the ORP of the original product will be -1000 mV. Flakes mixed from different crops will give an ORP of -577 mV. Steps for preparing oatmeal drink:

  • Rinse with 2 cups of cereal.
  • Fill them with 3 liters of drinking water.
  • Close the container with a lid and keep it in the dark for 24 hours.
  • Strain the drink, put in the refrigerator.
  • Pour used recyclable flakes again.

The use of water with negative ORP will significantly increase the body's capabilities, allow you to get rid of chronic diseases and excess weight.
