Periwinkle is an evergreen, small shrub with branched, recumbent and erect stems. The stems, pressing to the ground, take root, forming a dense carpet. Shiny, leathery leaves 3–5 cm long are evergreen. Single flowers of the original shape have a diameter of 2-3 cm. The plant blooms from April to September. Periwinkle has a superficial root system.

Belarus, Moldova, Caucasus, Prykarpattya, Transcarpathia, Khmelnytsky and Vinnytsia regions are the main areas of periwinkle harvesting. They are collected in May and June. The plant must be cut with a sickle or knife. Raw materials are dried under a canopy. For storage, use canvas or paper bags. The preservation period without loss of healing qualities is two years.

Growing periwinkle

Growing periwinkles does not cause much trouble, they are very simple and unpretentious. A flowering ground cover plant easily takes root from any node of the stem, quickly expands in breadth, forming bright cushions of luscious greenery. Periwinkle is an ornamental and medicinal plant. In nature, it grows in hornbeam, oak-hornbeam, oak forests, among thickets of bushes.

Sunny areas are excellent for growing it; it reproduces with the help of vegetative shoots. Trimmed parts of the stem, stuck in the soil, quickly take root.

The most convenient and effective way of reproduction of periwinkles is through layering: if you lightly sprinkle them with earth, then the roots also quickly grow into the soil. The plant perfectly tolerates heat and cold, is resistant to pests and diseases.

Useful properties of periwinkle

The beneficial properties of periwinkles have been known for a long time. The plant was used in magic, giving it protective properties. The plant contains alkaloids that have the property of preventing cell division, such as vincamine, vincapan, vincanorine, devinkan, reserpine, minovine. In pharmacology, these substances are artificially synthesized and effective immunosuppressants and anticancer drugs are obtained.

Ursolic acid, phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, cyclitols, steroids, rubber, flavonoids are useful in the treatment of certain diseases.

Periwinkles are attracted by charming flowers, which consist of five petals, most often blue or purple, pink and white are found. The flowers contain the flavonoid glycoside robinin, which consists of kaempferol and sugars (robinobiose and rhamnose). The use of infusion with periwinkle flowers helps with sexual weakness.

Pink periwinkle can be seen on balconies and in front gardens. The thermophilic plant was brought from the island of Java. It is undemanding to soil moisture, in the spring it is planted in the soil of a flower garden, in the fall it is transplanted into a pot - and you can admire its flowering all winter. You can also grow pink periwinkle from seeds. Sowing should be started in January-February. Seeds are sown in containers with a mixture of earth, humus and sand, placed in a plastic bag and removed in a dark place until shoots appear.

Proper care will result in growing a bright and healthy plant. The leaves of pink periwinkle are used for the production of the anticancer drug - rosevin. Periwinkle contains more than 60 alkaloids. They help the body fight cancer, inhibit cell growth by blocking metaphase mitosis.

Application of periwinkle

The use of periwinkles is indicated for diarrhea, bleeding, tuberculosis, scurvy. Periwinkle preparations are applied externally for wounds, itching of the skin. The plant is effective as a sedative, reduces dizziness and headache, improves heart function and increases capillary elasticity. By inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, periwinkles do not affect healthy ones.

The substance vinblastine is useful for lymphogranulomatosis and hematosarcomas, for cancer of the stomach, lungs, rectum, ovary. The wonderful substance vincristine is indispensable for leukemia, malignant tumors of the sympathetic nervous system, and breast cancer.

Infusion of periwinkle

Infusion of periwinkle small helps to stop blood in various bleeding (uterine and intestinal), is used as an astringent and antimicrobial agent.

Healing infusion, prepared from one tablespoon of chopped plant leaves and 1 cup boiling water in a water bath for 15 minutes, should be drunk 3 times a day, 1/3 cup.

Vinca tincture

A wonderful drug, one of the few, is used to treat cancer patients, with the exception of chemotherapy for blood cancer, sarcomas, blastomas, and tumors. The tincture also effectively treats fibroids, polyps in the uterus, endometriosis, prostatitis and prostate adenoma, female infertility.

The tincture is prepared quite simply: you need 2 tbsp. l. pour 250 ml of 70% alcohol into the dry plant. At room temperature, the mixture is infused in a dark place, after which it is filtered and taken 3 times a day one hour before meals. Tincture reception scheme: 1st and 2nd weeks - 5 drops per 50 ml of water, then a week break follows. Then the 3rd and 4th weeks - 10 drops per 50 ml of water, after - a break of 7 days. The course of treatment is 8 weeks. It is recommended to repeat it after 3 months.

Periwinkle decoction

Gargling with a decoction of periwinkle herb removes sore throats and soothes toothaches. Periwinkle in the form of decoctions is used against an acute lack of ascorbic acid in the human body. Perfectly amenable to treatment with a decoction of emphysema, dysentery, diarrhea. Uterine and intestinal bleeding stops, infertility, impotence and various skin diseases are treated.

With manifestations of arterial hypertension, drink a decoction three times a day, 1/3 cup. It is prepared in a water bath: one tablespoon of crushed leaves is poured with one glass of boiling water and boiled for 20 minutes, after which it is cooled and filtered.

Contraindications to the use of periwinkles

The plant is poisonous, this must be remembered. Overdose leads to cardiac depression. You can take all the products prepared on the basis of this medicinal herb only after consulting a doctor!
