Polydexa with adenoids
Adenoids are pathological proliferation of tissue of the nasopharyngeal tonsil. The disease is most often diagnosed in childhood, although some adults also suffer from adenoids. The pathology is characterized by difficulty in nasal breathing, a runny nose that does not respond to treatment, recurrent otitis media and nocturnal snoring. The main danger of adenoids is that they can cause serious complications: hearing impairment, up to the development of hearing loss, speech impairment, changes in the skeleton of the face, etc. In the first two stages of the development of the disease, conservative treatment is possible, and the third stage requires surgical intervention. To avoid surgery, it is necessary to consult an otolaryngologist on time and receive quality treatment.
Polydexa is one of the drugs that are often used in the complex therapy of adenoid vegetations. Its action is aimed at reducing tissue swelling, relieving inflammation, destroying pathogenic microorganisms and alleviating the main symptoms of the disease.
There are two types of the drug: Polydex and Polydex with phenylephrine. In the latter case, the drug is supplemented with a vasoconstrictor component.
Polydex is available in the form of a nasal spray, poured into plastic bottles with a spray dispenser. The volume of the bottle is 15 ml. The medicinal substance is a clear liquid that does not have any specific odor.
The composition of the preparation is as follows:
- Neomycin sulfate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
- Polymyxin B sulfate is a polypeptide antibiotic from the group of polymyxins.
- Dexamethasone is a hormonal component (glucocorticosteroids group).
- Phenylephrine (you can also purchase Polydex without this component) is an alpha-adrenergic agonist, a vasoconstrictor drug.

Effects from the use of the drug Polidex
The effects of the use of the drug Polydexa are determined by the components that make up it:
- The destruction of pathogenic flora is possible due to the presence of two antibacterial substances in the drug. They have a wide spectrum of action, enhancing the mutual effect. The combination of Neomycin and Polymyxin allows you to increase the antibacterial activity of the drug and destroy a larger number of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
- Reducing puffiness and the amount of mucus from the nose is possible due to the vasoconstrictor component. Thanks to him, relief comes within a few minutes after using the drug. The patient feels that it has become easier to breathe through his nose, and at night he stops snoring.
- Removal of inflammation. This effect is achieved not only by destroying the bacterial flora, but also due to the presence of a hormonal component in the drug. Suppression of the activity of a number of enzymes and substances responsible for the inflammatory response makes it easier to tolerate the disease.
- All manifestations of allergies are eliminated. This merit is also attributed to the hormonal component.
The multiple therapeutic effects of Polydexa allow it to be used to treat adenoids in both children and adults. It can also be prescribed to relieve acute and chronic rhinitis, sinusitis and rhinopharyngitis.
How to use Polydex for adenoids?
The drug is used internally, that is, it is irrigated with the nasal cavity.
The number of injections depends on the patient's age:
- At the age of 2.5 to 15 years, one injection is performed 3 times a day, that is, every 8 hours.
- Adult patients are prescribed one injection into each nostril, but up to 5 times a day.
The duration of treatment should not exceed 10 days.
The bottle must be kept strictly upright, with the dispenser completely inserted into the nostril. In this position, one sharp press is made on the container with the medicine. At this time, the drug is injected.
What should you pay attention to before starting treatment?
Do not worry about the fact that the drug is able to have a systemic effect on the body. When used topically in acceptable dosages, the drug is not absorbed into the bloodstream.
Sometimes a person does not feel that a drug has been injected, since it does not have a smell. Do not press the bottle again, so as not to lead to an overdose. Although its probability is extremely low, because the components of the drug, when used topically, do not enter the bloodstream.
To increase the effectiveness of treatment and speed up recovery, it is necessary to rinse the sinuses before injecting the drug. To do this, you can use a saline solution prepared at home or a saline solution purchased from a pharmacy.
Although the vasoconstrictor effect from the use of the drug is observed after a few minutes, this does not mean that its therapeutic effect is also lightning fast. As a rule, positive dynamics can be tracked only on the third day of treatment. Its minimum duration is five days. If you use the drug for a shorter amount of time, then the risk of developing bacterial resistance to the components of the drug increases.
Doctors recommend that after the completion of the therapeutic course, refrain from repeating it for at least 3 months. This is necessary to prevent the pathogenic flora from developing resistance to the drug.
If the patient receives treatment for low blood pressure, or takes diuretics, then the use of Polydexa should be abandoned. Phenylephrine included in its composition is capable of interacting with these drugs and reducing their effect. Provided that the combination of these drugs cannot be avoided, the patient should be under medical supervision. Polydex can be combined with other drugs.
The drug should not be used to flush the sinuses, as this will lead to an overdose.
If a person is professionally involved in sports, then he should use Polydex with caution. The fact is that the medicinal product contains substances that can give a positive result during the doping control.
During treatment, there is no need to give up driving or other transport, since the drug does not have any effect on the mental capabilities of a person, does not reduce his performance.
If the drug gets on the mucous membrane of the eyes, they must be thoroughly rinsed with a stream of running water.
After using the drug, the dispenser must be wiped with a dry cloth and closed with a cap. This will prevent dirt and dust from getting inside the bottle. Polydexa does not require special storage conditions; it must be kept at room temperature in places that are inaccessible to children.
Potential harm
Most patients tolerate the drug well. However, the possibility of allergic reactions cannot be ruled out. They come down to local manifestations: watery eyes, itching in the nose, sneezing, etc.
If during the use of the drug unusual reactions of the body are observed, then it is necessary to abandon its use. It is highly advisable to get medical advice.
Contraindications
Not all patients can use Polydexa to treat adenoids.
The use of the drug must be abandoned in the following cases:
- There is a suspicion that the patient develops angle-closure glaucoma.
- The patient has a viral infection.
- The person suffers from kidney failure.
- Women who are carrying a baby or breastfeeding.
- Children under the age of 2.5.
- People with individual intolerance to the components that make up the drug.
If the above contraindications are absolute, then there are also conditions in which the drug can be used, but with caution and under medical supervision. In particular, we are talking about high blood pressure, coronary heart disease and hyperthyroidism.
Pros and cons of Polydex
Advantages of Polydex:
- The drug is equipped with a spray dispenser, which allows you to accurately measure the number of injections. During irrigation of the nasal sinuses, the drug is evenly distributed over the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, penetrating to the required depth.
- The drug has a complex effect. It is aimed not only at relieving the symptoms of the disease, but also at eliminating its root cause.
- Relief of nasal breathing occurs within a few minutes if Polydex supplemented with phenylephrine is used for treatment.
- The drug is produced by a well-known French manufacturer (Laboratories BOUCHARA-RECORDATI), which guarantees its high quality and safety.
- The shelf life of the drug is long, which is 3 years.
- The drug is sold without a prescription.
Cons of the drug Polydex:
- It cannot be used to treat viral infections. Therefore, you need to be sure that the cause of the adenoids is an allergic reaction or bacterial flora.
- The drug has many contraindications.
- The drug can cause side effects.
