What is post-injection infiltrate?
The compacted tissue resulting from the accumulation of non-inherent cellular elements, lymph and blood, is called an infiltrate. In acute inflammation, infiltration occurs through rapidly multiplied tissue cells, the appearance of leukocytes in large numbers, lymphocytes, as well as the appearance of blood plasma and lymph, sweated from blood vessels. The tissue in the infiltrate area acquires an increased volume, changes color, becomes painful and dense.
Chronic infections cause infiltration that develops at the site where the pathogen was introduced. Cell reproduction occurs due to the cells of the local connective tissue type. Surgical operations create an artificial infiltration that occurs during anesthesia at the time of tissue impregnation with various anesthetics. Local inflammation that develops in the area where the intramuscular injection was made is called post-injection infiltration. As a rule, it is observed in the gluteal region.
Reasons for the development of post-injection infiltrate
The state of post-injection infiltration is called an iatrogenic pathology. The reason for the inflammatory process can be violated sanitary standards and non-compliance with the rules according to which injections should be performed. Poorly treated injection site, an infection accidentally caught on the needle, the accumulation of bacteria in the air in the chamber in an increased amount and other factors that significantly increase the likelihood of infection.
In cases where the occurrence of post-injection infiltration occurs without any apparent reason, the patient's immunity should be analyzed as a possible cause of inflammation. Infiltration occurs without the participation of infection - this is an inflammation of the antiseptic form, it is called "bumps", which dissolve on their own. The gluteal region often suffers from post-injection infiltration, it is not always possible to prevent its occurrence, which is why doctors prefer intravenous administration of drugs, if this is permissible.
Symptoms of gluteal infiltration
The area of the buttocks is the place where post-injection infiltration most often occurs, and this is understandable, since injection treatment prescribed in a long course is usually intramuscular. The developed fiber of the subcutaneous fat tissue of the buttocks is conducive to the multiplication of pathological microorganisms that have fallen into it. Infiltration is a pronounced local inflammatory reaction that develops due to infection or medication entering the muscle. If this condition has no complications, then it can go away on its own.
Infiltration is the first manifestation of an incorrect injection. Its symptoms are: tissue compaction, an inflammatory process, in which a slight temperature appears, pain on palpation, redness. This stage proceeds without purulent formations and has a certain mechanism. The onset of conditions (infection) allows leukocytes to pass through the capillary walls. Leukocytes attract fluid, and the vessels themselves expand, which gives the infiltrate the opportunity to blush.
The rapid course of infection and the inflammatory process in the area of post-injection infiltration causes destruction of muscle tissue, as well as massive destruction of neutrophils, followed by the formation of pus and cellular detritus. Thus, an abscess is formed, represented by painful softening, which must be drained (opened) by the surgeon.
Treatment of infiltration of the gluteal region
Often a bruise, bump or abscess appears at the site where the injection was given. The reasons for their appearance are very different. A bruise, or hematoma, is a subcutaneous hemorrhage that occurs at the site of vascular injury. It does not harm health and does not require special treatment. An infiltrate or lump, to the formation of which does not dissolve the drug (disappear in two weeks) or an infection (last two weeks or more), is treated with conservative procedures.
In the treatment of infiltration, anti-inflammatory therapy and physiotherapeutic methods are combined. Local applications are prescribed with the use of antiseptics, electrophoresis, UHF. Large infiltrates are treated with antibiotics. All therapy is aimed at resolving the inflammatory process, so as not to allow the occurrence of an abscess, which has a purulent filling, soreness and is treated with a surgical method.
