Useful properties and use of ram, contraindications
Botanical characteristics of the ram
Ram (Latin Huperzia selago) belongs to the Lycopodiaceae family. It belongs to evergreen herbaceous plants, has a wide range of medicinal effects. The stalk of the ram is erect, strictly extending upward, reaching 30 cm in length. Leaves, or phylloids, are located closely, in many rows, have an acicular, linear-lanceolate, entire-edged shape, up to 1 mm wide. At the base, the leaves are widened, to the edge - jagged, deep green.
Sporangia are found in the middle or upper part of the stem or in the leaf axils; spore-bearing spikelets (strobila) do not arise. Spores form in June. Buds form at the top of the stem, protecting themselves with small leaves. When autumn comes, the buds fall off. The root system of the ram is undeveloped, weak.
Ram grows well in peat soil, mostly wet, loves shade. It is not easy to plant a ram by sowing it into the soil - few of its spores germinate. It is recommended to propagate the ram with the help of shoots, of which it has a lot. The ram is harvested from August to September.
The ram can be found in the coniferous forest belt of Russia, in Siberia, the Caucasus, Altai, the Carpathians and the Far East. It lives in swamps, coniferous forests, on rocks, on acidic, humus soils, as well as on rubble surfaces.
Useful properties of ram
The ram herb contains a certain amount of alkaloids (0.12-1.3%), including: nicotine, annotinine, clavatin, lycopodin, acripholine, pseudoselagin, clavatotoxin, selagin, selagonin, serratidine, huperazine and others. The aerial part of the sheep contains triterpenoids of the seratin type, pectin compounds, many useful organic acids and fats, which include glycerides and oleic or palmitic acids.
The sheep also contains flavonoids, glycosides, resins and mucus, protein compounds, but the biological activity of this plant is determined by a huge amount of alkaloids.
The use of ram
In folk medicine, ram infusions are prepared for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, neurasthenia, diarrhea, cystitis, for cessation of seizures and glaucoma, by ingestion. Outwardly, with the help of ram infusions, skin diseases, alopecia and conjunctivitis are treated. Traditional Asian medicine treats tumors and blood diseases, memory disorders and myasthenia gravis with sheep.
Due to the content of huperazine A in some types of sheep, this plant has been used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. There is a practice of making preparations from sheep for the treatment of chronic alcoholism. By this treatment, an aversion to the consumption of alcoholic beverages is caused. This technique is practiced in specialized medical institutions.
Various decoctions and infusions are made from the top of the plant to treat various diseases. After collecting the upper part of the sheep in the summer-autumn period, the grass is dried at temperatures up to 50 ° C in dryers or under a canopy. The dried herb is stored in dry places, after which infusions of various healing effects are prepared from it.
It should not be forgotten that the ram is poisonous. In frequent cases, it acts on the body as an emetic, laxative, and also an abortifacient. In case of possible poisoning, a person develops nausea, vomiting, dizziness, chills, a decrease in pressure and pain of a different nature. Sheep infusions should be used on the recommendation of a doctor.
