7 mistakes due to which the tonometer overestimates the pressure readings
Every adult needs to regularly monitor the level of blood pressure. This recommendation is given by all doctors without exception. It is no secret that diseases of the cardiovascular system are the leading cause of death worldwide. Knowing the blood pressure indicators, you can detect deterioration of health in time and take the necessary measures.
However, you need to use the tonometer correctly. Measurement errors can be fatal.
To prevent them, you must follow the recommendations from the American Heart Association:
- Before taking measurements, you need to go to the toilet. If the bladder is full, then plus 10-15 points to the total will be provided.
- Feet should be on the floor, not suspended. With your back you need to lean on the back of the chair. If the posture is taken incorrectly, it will add 6-10 points to the total values.
- The hand on which the device cuff is located should be on a flat surface. You cannot hold it on weight.
- Crossed legs can add 2 to 8 points.
- It is recommended to wear the cuff on skin without clothes. Depending on the thickness of the fabric, it can add from 5 to 50 points.
- What matters is the size of the cuff. If it is small, then the blood pressure level will be lower by 2-10 points.
- During the measurement, you must be motionless. You shouldn't even talk. Otherwise, the indicators will be higher by 10 values.
According to statistics, home blood pressure monitors are mistaken in 70% of cases. Most often men receive incorrect data. To minimize the likelihood of error, you need to follow the advice of experts.
