Symptoms and treatment of vitreous hemorrhage

The cause of hemorrhage into the vitreous body of the eye, or hemophthalmos, can be simultaneously several pathological conditions - such as contusion due to a shock, which provoked a violation of the integrity of the vascular wall, or a penetrating wound, as a result of which the eyeball was damaged. It can be hemorrhagic glaucoma or inflammatory disease of the retina (uveal tract), in some cases, hemophthalmos may be associated with diabetic retinopathy. These diagnoses cause extensive bleeding, while significant areas of the retina are affected. Less pronounced hemorrhages can accompany atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, and endocrine system disorders.

Symptoms of vitreous hemorrhage

Symptoms of hemorrhage in the vitreous humor of the eye appear due to the penetration of blood into the cavity of the organ, which permeates the vitreous humor. Most often, the hemorrhage disappears two to three days after the appearance. Sometimes the healing process can take several weeks or even months. Symptoms of hemorrhage remain for a longer period if the hemorrhage occupies a large area, if the patient is elderly and in some other cases. In this case, crystallization of hemoglobin occurs, falling out into the retina. As a complication in such patients, an adhesive process can begin, while the structure of the vitreous body itself changes and vision decreases. Total hemorrhage can cause retinal detachment.

It is important not to confuse hemophthalmus with small vitreous hemorrhages. Partial hemorrhages do not occupy large areas of the retina and go away on their own without requiring treatment. Vitreous hemorrhage most often occupies the entire retinal surface. It causes temporary complete loss of vision or blurred vision.

Treatment of vitreous hemorrhage

Modern medicine does not recognize traditional methods of treating vitreous hemorrhage of the eye, since it is believed that the recommendations of healers do not completely relieve the patient of the symptoms of the disease. There are also no drugs that can speed up the process of blood resorption. In some cases, doctors prescribe emoxipin, but its benefit in the treatment of pathology has not yet been proven.

Complete rest helps well, taking high doses of vitamins of group K and C. In inpatient treatment, patients receive a blood transfusion, which helps to speed up the resorption of clots, intravenous administration of a solution of glucose and sodium chloride is also recommended. Patients are also prescribed vitreous injections.

If the therapy is ineffective, the patient is shown an operation, which results in excision of the vitreous body (suction). Hyaluronic acid preparations are injected in place of the removed tissue sites.

Experts advise to undergo an examination for any suspicion of hemorrhage in the vitreous body of the eye, including with a slight manifestation of symptoms. This will allow to exclude pathology that can cause the development of hemophthalmos, or to prescribe appropriate treatment in a timely manner. To prevent the disease, it is also important to avoid mechanical trauma to the eyeball.
