Symptoms and treatment of catarrhal glossitis

Catarrhal glossitis is a disease of the tongue that is acutely inflammatory. It is most often a sign of stomatitis and is very rarely an independent form of the disease. Catarrhal glossitis can be caused by carious teeth, dental plaque, difficult teething, dentures, oral injuries, burns, smoking, alcohol consumption, poisoning with heavy metal salts, or simply non-compliance with basic oral hygiene.

This disease can be a sign of fever, flu, acute respiratory infections, allergies, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and other systems of the human body.

With catarrhal glossitis, there is a dense plaque, swelling of the tongue, its compaction and, as a result, a decrease in its mobility. If epithelium is rejected, then areas of atrophy appear in red. The lingual papillae are smoothed. Patients note mild soreness, a burning sensation, a decrease in taste, an increase in salivation. A fungal infection can also join this disease.

The appearance on the tongue of spots with a diameter of 0.5 cm, at first grayish, and then reddish, which are delimited by yellow-gray ridges of thickened thread-like papillae, is called the geographical language. At first, the spots remain unchanged, then within a few hours or days they begin to change their shape and location. When the spots merge with each other, a semblance of a geographical map with a pattern of irregular outlines is obtained. These spots usually do not turn into ulcers and erosion, so there is no pain, sometimes only a slight burning sensation is possible. Also, there is no reduction or perversion of taste sensations.

The symptoms of catarrhal glossitis can last from several days to several months. It happens that the disease is recurrent. Geographic language can be found in children aged 1 to 7 years, as well as in adults, more often from 30 to 40 years old. It is known that glossitis is most common among female representatives. There were cases when the geographical tongue was combined with the formation of cracks on the surface of the tongue, as well as with the appearance of similar elements in other areas of the oral mucosa ("geographical stomatitis").

Catarrhal glossitis treatment

Catarrhal glossitis is treated by eliminating irritating factors such as a sharp tooth edge, dentures on the teeth or calculus and deposits. Next, the oral cavity is irrigated with a 2% sodium bicarbonate solution. In the presence of an abscess or phlegmon, surgical intervention is required.

Outcome of the disease: catarrhal glossitis is cured within a few days; with purulent glossitis, a radical autopsy is performed, thanks to the active use of antibiotics, a favorable outcome of the disease can be predicted.
