Purulent mumps

What is purulent mumps?

Purulent parotitis is accompanied by purulent inflammation of the parotid salivary gland. Staphylococci and streptococci can be found in the secret of the gland during microbiological examination. The pathways for the spread of infection include stomatogenic (the infection spreads in the oral cavity), hematogenous (the infection spreads through the bloodstream) and lymphogenous (lymph facilitates the transmission of infection).

Types and forms of purulent mumps

There are several forms of the disease. The characteristic symptoms of the catarrhal form are redness of the mucous membrane, edema and thick secretion secreted from the salivary gland.

The purulent form is the most common, accompanied by leukocyte infiltration of the gland parenchyma. In some places on the surface of the gland, foci of purulent fusion of tissues are noticeable, saliva may be absent altogether or be released in very small quantities. This form is characterized by leaks of pus in the neck, temporal region, etc.

With a gangrenous form, the tissues of the parenchyma of the gland undergo necrosis and melt, the gland itself can be almost completely destroyed.

Symptoms of purulent mumps

During the course of the disease, the symptoms of purulent mumps begin in the second half of the disease, if mumps occurs as a complication after surgery, then its symptoms appear on the fourth to fifth day after surgery. The disease is accompanied by fever, headaches, painful sensations while chewing or swallowing. A general blood test in this case shows leukocytosis and a shift of the leukocyte formula to the left.

On examination, swelling, induration and enlargement of the salivary glands can be noted. The skin over the gland turns red and swells. Edema appears on the oral mucosa. At the exit sites of the canals of the parotid salivary gland, redness is noticeable. Three to four days after the onset of mumps, purulent contents are released from the canal.

Catarrhal and purulent parotitis are almost completely cured, and the gland, after appropriate therapy, restores its functions in full.

At the first stage of the disease, treatment of purulent mumps is carried out by conservative methods: antibiotic therapy is prescribed, hygienic procedures are carried out to treat the oral cavity, a certain diet is followed, etc.

The beginning of a purulent process implies an urgent operation. Salivary stones are surgically removed, the site of inflammation is opened and drained. Thanks to surgery, tension in the tissues of the salivary gland is reduced. As part of the operation, incisions are made up to three cm, taking into account the location of individual branches of the facial nerve.
