Salpingitis

Causes and symptoms of salpingitis

What is salpingitis?

Salpingitis is an inflammatory process in one or both fallopian tubes. If salpingitis proceeds against the background of inflammation of the ligaments and ovaries, it is called "salpingo-oophoritis", or "adnexitis".

Salpingitis reasons

In most cases, the cause of salpingitis is pathogenic microflora, which most often enters the fallopian tube from the uterus, after which it enters the ovaries or ligamentous apparatus.

Inflammatory exudate, which accumulates in the tissues during the course of the pathological process, subsequently leads to the formation of scars and impaired patency of the fallopian tubes, which in turn can cause infertility.

Acute salpingitis may be accompanied by the appearance of cavities in the fallopian tubes filled with pus or serous discharge. Such formations can lead to an ovarian abscess, as well as the spread of an infectious process into the abdominal cavity, causing pelvic inflammatory disease or interintestinal abscess.

Chronic salpingitis is considered one of the most common causes of infertility in women. Chronic inflammation in the fallopian tubes begins in most cases with sexually transmitted infectious diseases, such as ureaplasmosis, chlamydia, mycoplasmosis, trichomonadiosis, etc. …

Salpingitis symptoms

The main symptoms of salpingitis at the very beginning of the disease are pain and urinary disorders. A pulling pain is localized in the lower abdomen and is accompanied by frequent and false urge to urinate.

Later, purulent abundant discharge from the vagina joins the manifestations of the disease. In addition, women with salpingitis experience severe pain during intercourse.

Acute salpingitis is accompanied by severe pain in the peritoneum and lower back, as well as high body temperature. Chronic salpingitis proceeds with a low intensity of pain syndrome, while the body temperature of the patients is kept, as a rule, within the subfebrile range. The disease, which is chronic, eventually leads to a violation of the menstrual cycle.

The method of treating salpingitis is determined by the stage and characteristics of the course of the disease. When prescribing antibiotic therapy at an early stage of acute salpingitis, the effectiveness of treatment becomes noticeable already on the seventh to tenth day, which often helps prevent the transition of pathology to a chronic form.

It is important to remember that self-treatment of salpingitis in any form of the disease is unacceptable due to the high probability of developing irreversible changes in the fallopian tubes, which can cause infertility and serve as an indication for surgical intervention.

The operation is necessary for patients who have found a neoplasm in the fallopian tube region, resembling a tumor in structure. Also, surgical intervention is required when the adhesion process in the fallopian tubes occurs, if a woman intends to become pregnant, and when fluid accumulates in the intervals between the adhesions of the fallopian tube.
