The most susceptible to lactostasis are women who have given birth to their first child, since the ducts of the mammary glands have not yet been developed, tortuous and narrow. With incomplete emptying of the breast, pressure in its ducts increases, as well as inside individual lobes of the organ, as a result of which edema and infiltration of adjacent tissues develops.

With prolonged congestion, milk is reabsorbed, which acquires pyrogenic properties, which leads to an increase in the patient's temperature.
